Keyboard Layout: Unicode vs Kruti Dev

In Kruti Dev, English keys map directly to specific Hindi shapes.

What is the difference between Unicode and Kruti Dev?

Unicode (the Mangal font) is the modern standard used on the web, phones and modern Word documents. Kruti Dev is an older ΓÇ£legacyΓÇ¥ font where each Devanagari letter sits on a normal English keyboard key. Design and DTP software such as CorelDraw and PageMaker were built around Kruti Dev, so text must be converted before it displays correctly there.

Do I need to install the Kruti Dev font?

The converted codes are correct on their own. But to actually SEE them as Hindi letters, the Kruti Dev 010 font must be installed on the computer/program where you paste the result. You can preview here as plain characters; install the font in Word/CorelDraw for the final Devanagari look.

Is my text safe?

Yes. Conversion runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing you type is uploaded, logged or stored anywhere.

Which conjuncts and special forms are supported?

The engine handles matras, the reordered short‑i, anusvara/chandrabindu, reph, half‑letters, subjoined “र”, Devanagari digits and common conjuncts (क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, श्र). Rare stacked conjuncts may need a small manual touch‑up.

Can I convert Kruti Dev back to Unicode?

This page focuses on Unicode → Kruti Dev, the most common need for printers and designers. Reverse conversion support is planned.
